Elsie Gillezeau

Greens Candidate - Lawson Ward - Waverly council

Hi, I’m Elsie Gillezeau (she/her).

I’m running in the Lawson Ward for Waverley Council at the upcoming election, fighting for climate action and consent education.

Waverley has one of the largest young person populations in Sydney with over 60% of our community aged 34 or younger. However, this is not currently reflected in our council and the voices of young people are not being heard.

As a young woman, I have been deeply inspired by the recent consent activism campaign that was sparked by Chanel Contos’ petition in early 2021. The Eastern Suburbs of Sydney were spotlighted in particular for having an immense problem with safe and consensual sex. I hope through locally funded initiatives to run programs at schools and outreaches at local beaches we can take steps towards changing the conversation and the culture of consent in our area.

Climate action is also something I have been deeply passionate about. From Climate Strikes to #StopAdani I’ve always been engaged and outraged by the lack of action our federal government has taken towards the crisis. However, while structural and cultural change needs to be initiated at a federal level, I believe there are many things that can be pushed forwards locally. Installing solar panels and electric car charging points at our local shopping centre carpark and increasing the greenery in our beautiful area are policies I hope to support.
